SMC's Environmental Protection Committee (EPC) is responsible for SMC environmental policy and for managing and monitoring the conduct of environmental programs, such as SMC's pollution control and pollution prevention programs. AFR 19-8 "Environmental Protection Committees and Environmental Reporting" (19 August 1988) established the Environmental Protection Committee (EPC) and assigned responsibilities.

The SMC Vice Commander chairs the EPC, with the Staff Director acting as Vice Chairperson. The SMC EPC is composed of representatives from the SMC staff offices and System Program Offices (SPOs). The Environmental Management Branch serves as the secretary for the EPC.
